Pork Chops on Deveaux Street

They say you can find the best food in the most out-the-way places. Today, even before 12PM, I had one of the nicest fried pork chops in a while and I am still looking forward to snacking on the second one in a little while. You could eat the fat and the bone, sorry potcakes! And do you even know where Deveaux Street is, much less where they sell food there?

As classy as it sounds, it seems my destiny lies on Dowdeswell Street. Being by heart an entrepreneur, a known free spirit and a consumate island hopper, I have not worked that many actual jobs in Nassau. However, two of my previous forays have been on or off Dowdewell Street, and now I find myself here again. Ah well, c'est la vie. No complaints.

porkchop.jpgBeing here all day means one has to eat, so I called my father and asked what was good. He directed me to Deveaux Street, which is the side road next to Island 102.9FM, to a restaurant (and of course, bar) that had "pretty good" food. After almost walking by, and only deducing where he meant by the process of elimination plus the emblematic tinted glass doors, I found the place. Cold A/C, darkened ,with a jukebox and full bar, it was certainly one of those typical Bahamian out-the-way spots. What's ready? got me the choice of fried snapper or fried pork chops. So much for that roast beef sandwich for which I had been hoping, and forget the whole wheat bread too. Being the low carb afficiando that I am, I nixed the peas 'n' rice and went with Fried Pork Chop, Cole Slaw and Tossed Salad with Onions. Being the pig I am, I also got Baked Macaroni. There were two crates of big white crabs on the ground in the corner, one of which had the biggest claw I had ever seen. I asked the lady what they did with those live crabs, and she said Fridays is Crab 'n' Grits and Mondays is Crab 'n' Rice, and sometimes Crab Soup. Not sure bout the white crab for rice, but the Crab 'n' Grits is a must have for an island girl like me. So, I paid and left with Friday's menu on my mind.

The verdict? VEMUDDO. The two centre-cut chops were seasoned to the bone, in fact I think I ate the bone. Pan-fried to perfection, no batter and deep frying here, with a tenderness that only comes from good overnight seasoning and proper timing. The fat was crispy and delectable, and the meat was not tough at all. The cole slaw was so down-home I thought my aunt made it, chunky and full of fresh tomatoes, not all limp and shredded and mayonaissey like so many places. The macaroni could have used a bit of pepper but otherwise it was cheesy as hell and well-seasoned. The "salad" was the traditional iceberg lettuce and tomatoes, but the lady had warned me of that upfront so I can't really complain. I have no idea what this place is named, but if you want a good chop, this is the spot. I am guessing it would taste really good steamed down and plunked on top of some good peas and rice too.

Looking forward to Friday...;-)
