The Ministry of Legal Affairs along with the Consumer Affairs division recently issued advisories in the press discouraging the use of certain products suspected of being contaminated with the chemical, which has been blamed for recent deaths amongst infants in China.

nissincupnoodles.gifMelamine is a chemical used to artificially improve the protein content in foodstuff, namely milk. Recent finding have shown thousands of children in China suffered from illnesses related to Melamine, including acute kidney failure. Several have died.

Many companies across China were forced to recall their products after testing found the chemical in baby formulas, milks and eggs. Melamine has been described as harmful if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through the skin.

Chronic exposure has also been reported to result in cancer and damage to the reproductive organs.

Although these were the only items specified in the publication, the Ministry advised the public to be cautious when purchasing or consuming any products from foreign sources.
